The National Youth Chamber for Climate in Guinea aims to strengthen young people’s involvement in the fight against climate change. This year, the 6th Youth Camp took place in Kindia, Guinea, from 26 to 30 June, organized by the Platform for Advocacy, Research and Capacity Building of NGOs (PRONG), in collaboration with the Ministry of the Environment, Water and Forests, and funded by the Belgian Development Agency Agence Belge. The camp was bringing together more than 200 young people from all regions of Guinea. Three Guinean activists of the Blue Community Réseach Ecole RadioChico RERC were among the participants. Here their short report.
Over the course of five days, participants engaged in discussions and attended panels covering key themes. The first panel focused on the restoration of degraded landscapes and its positive impacts on local communities. Strategies for sustainable revitalization were discussed, emphasizing successful approaches and future prospects.
The second panel addressed forest restoration, exploring expert-driven strategies and plans. Participants discussed planning approaches and long-term perspectives to ensure forest resilience in the face of climate change.
The third panel focused on preventing and managing climate risks, emphasizing the importance of integrated community-based adaptation strategies to build resilience.
The fourth panel discussed the mobilization of climate finance for young people and civil society organizations. The challenges and opportunities for youth in accessing climate finance were highlighted, and successful resource mobilization strategies were shared.
Finally, the fifth panel explored best practices in communication to raise community awareness of climate issues. Innovative and effective approaches were discussed, aiming to encourage community involvement in the fight against climate change.
Overall, the camp was a resounding success, bringing together experts in the field and strengthening youth engagement in the fight against climate change in Guinea. The program aimed to promote integrated and resilient approaches for a sustainable future. The camp provided a platform for over 200 participants to learn from and exchange ideas with local and international experts, fostering a sense of empowerment and inspiring youth-led initiatives in the face of climate challenges.
