In 2022, the 9th World Water Forum was held in Dakar, Senegal. At the same time, the Alternative World Water Forum (AWWF), was held. The AWWF offered a space for water justice organizations, communities and defenders fighting for water justice to raise their voices and challenge the corporate and financial capture of water. In the spring of 2024, an attendee of the AWWF and long-time water justice activist was elected as the new president of Senegal. The Blue Planet Project’s Rachel Woods interviewed Fatou Diouf, Project Coordinator for French-Speaking Africa for Public Services International, a member of the Senegalese Water Justice Network (SWJN) which was formed out of the AWWF in 2022, to hear more about the future of water in Senegal under new leadership. This interview has been edited for length and clarity.
