Paris bans plastic bottles for runs

The deputy mayor of the Blue Community / Blue City of Paris in charge of sport, Pierre Rabadan, announced on Monday that the use of single-use plastic bottles would be banned at all running events in the capital. Reusable bottles will be offered instead. He explained during the presentation of the 46th edition of the Vredestein 20 km, which takes place on 13 October 2024 in front of the Eiffel Tower:

In Paris, you will no longer be able to organise a race if you use plastic bottles, it’s as simple as that. The ban comes into force today. It was one of the objectives of the Games legacy. We need to reduce the use of single-use plastic in our daily lives, and sport needs to get on board. It’s an evolution, and even a revolution for the organisers.

Every year, more than 150 races are organised in the capital, including the Paris Marathon, the next edition of which will take place on 13 April 2025. According to the 44-year-old former rugby player, these individual plastic bottles account for 20 tonnes of plastic every year. Reusable cups will be offered as an alternative to runners at the various refreshment zones for running events.
