Opening bottles several times dramatically increases the amount of microplastics! Most samples of water and soft drinks from plastic bottles sold in supermarkets contain microplastics. In some cases, even in high concentrations. What is interesting is that the concentration obviously increases the more often you remove the lid to drink.
Based on a study of Coca-Cola and Schweppes from plastic bottles carried out by the organization Agir pour l’environnement (Action for the Environment) this year, the German Report24 states: After opening the bottle for the first time, 4 microplastic particles were found per liter of Coca-Cola and 4.6 particles per liter of Schweppes. After opening it 20 times, the values rose to 46 particles per liter of Coke and 62 particles per liter of Schweppes. Most of the particles were smaller than 500 micrometers (μm), with the majority being under 100 μm. The particles caused by opening were mostly under 50 μm. Large amounts of nanoplastic particles were also found in both soft drinks. This means that the more often you open the bottles to drink from them, the greater the microplastic contamination becomes.
