Peru could run out of drinking water by 2030, while at the same time it has large reserves of freshwater in its territory, according to a report by the Global Water Partnership (GWP). More than 34 million inhabitants may not have access to this basic and essential natural resource, according to the report – despite having one of the most important water reserves in the world. According to the country’s National Centre for Strategic Planning (CEPLAN), 58% of the population will face this problem in 2030.
With this scenario, Peru is one of the most affected nations in Latin America and the Caribbean, although it is not the only one. Globally, Peru is ranked 66th in terms of water stress among UN members.
Below Peru come Chile and Argentina to complete this podium of South American countries that could face water shortages in a few years’ time. The first of these two countries is most at risk, as it is ranked 25th in the world in terms of water stress. Meanwhile, Argentina has problems in some regions due to the overexploitation of aquifers, drought and competition for the use of this resource in different areas of the economy mixed with human consumption.
