Water Watchers take on Blue Triniton

The Canadian Blue Community (Wellington) Water Watchers sent out a call “Big news for ending bottled water out of California!” “The (US) Forest Service notified BlueTriton Brands in a letter last month [that] its application for a new permit has been denied.” Although our friends in California still have some work ahead of them, this is great news for the anti-bottled water movement.

Permits for Blue Triton’s two wells in Wellington County (formerly operated by Nestle) are up for renewal in November 2026. We must do everything we can starting now to ensure these permits are not renewed.

Water Watchers has been an important advocate on this issue since our founding in 2007. We helped drive Nestle out of North America, we’ve been working in allyship with Indigenous leaders to fight for water for all, and we are ready to continue the fight to deny any water bottling permit renewals in Ontario.

We don’t know if the next provincial election will be in 2025 or 2026, but we need to prepare now to be able to fight for water as a public good and put an end to water bottling in Ontario forever.

The Greens and NDP already have the phase out of permits for water bottling in their party platforms. A 2018 public opinion poll showed the public supports a phase out of this wasteful use of precious groundwater. Now, we have to galvanize support by reinvigorating the campaign against water profiteering. We need to ensure that commitments to water as a public good and phasing out permits to bottle water are election issues.

We have been mobilizing support again on this issue, including becoming the newest Blue Community, a representation of our commitment to live our values. Now, we need you to help us get an end to bottled water back on the political agenda.
