The Blue Community / Blue City of Cádiz in the South of Spain and its public water service Aguas de Cádiz announce a new edition of ‘Water at School’ that will bring the importance of water conservation in a context of drought to the classroom.
With this campaign, the municipal service aims to continue raising awareness of this scarce and vital resource, as well as the importance of the water cycle. Aguas de Cádiz is also announcing a new edition of its “Water in Schools” environmental education programme, which for the sixth year in a row is particularly important given the current drought. These educational workshops have reached almost 15,000 children in the city, who each year learn about new aspects of the water cycle.
The Education Department of Cádiz City Council has been working with the municipal company to ensure the proper development of the project, which is offered to schools as part of their educational programme. This year, in addition to providing information on the integral water cycle, the programme will focus on the responsible use of water and pollution.
The programme is aimed at primary school pupils (aged 6 to 12) and lower secondary school pupils (aged 12 to 14), adapting the content to each stage of education and ensuring continuity. In this way, students who start the programme in the first year of primary school will complete their knowledge in the sixth year of primary school, acquiring the basic concepts related to water.
This year, Aguas de Cádiz has renewed the educational materials offered in the classrooms, reflecting the situation of water scarcity in the province of Cádiz. This school year, the experience of taking ‘Water at School’ to the classrooms of the Puerta del Mar Hospital will also be repeated, as it is important that the workshop reaches all the children in the city.
Since its first edition, ‘Water at School’ has been very well received and accepted by the educational centres of Cádiz, which see these workshops as an ideal complement to their educational programmes. This year it will also serve as a further means of raising public awareness of the need for responsible use of this scarce and limited resource.
Aguas de Cádiz emphasises the importance of carrying out these environmental education campaigns with children in mind, as they are not only great recipients of environmental messages, but also great communicators who can pass these messages on to their families, thus raising awareness of the importance of water conservation and its correct use.
The classroom activities last about 60 minutes and are divided into two parts: the first part is theoretical, in which the teacher explains the subject to be dealt with in a dynamic and participative way, and the second part is practical, with more dynamic exercises such as games, experiments, worksheets… Schools are also offered the “Botanical Adventure in Genovés Park” activity, which lasts 90 minutes and explains the different uses of water in the city and its relationship with green spaces, gardens and the general maintenance of the city.
