Improved access to clean water and sanitation in Africa (African Water Vision 2025) on WikiFreedom:
The history of the African water crisis can be traced back to colonialism when European powers exploited the continent’s resources for their own gain. During this time, infrastructure was neglected and many Africans were forced to live without access to clean water and sanitation. This led to the spread of diseases such as cholera and typhoid fever. After independence, many African countries continued to struggle with providing adequate water and sanitation services due to poverty, corruption, and lack of investment. In some areas, women and girls spent hours fetching water from distant sources, often at great risk to their safety and health.
In recent years, there have been efforts to address the water crisis in Africa through initiatives like the African Water Vision 2025, which aims to provide access to safe drinking water and sanitation for all by the year 2025. However, progress has been slow and challenges remain, including poor governance, limited funding, and ongoing conflicts over resource use.
