A Piikani First Nation environmental group lobbying against a proposed open pit coal mine isn’t happy with the Alberta Government lifting a moratorium on new development and exploration in their territory. Adam North Peigan, chair of the Mountain Valley Child Society, a name bestowed by Piikani Elders, said:
“It’s quite confusing because it really has trumped that initial announcement they made less than a month ago. It’s really negated that announcement.”
The news of the lifting of the moratorium came just over a month after the Alberta government announced it was working on a new policy framework for open pit mining (see previous entries in the Blue News).
