Tegucigalpa, the capital of Honduras, published the drinking water distribution schedule for January. The Municipal Water and Sewerage Authority (UMAPS) is satisfied with the “stable distribution thanks to high reservoir levels”, but having water flowing from the tap every day and all around the clock is a dream.
“With the Los Laureles and La Concepción reservoirs operating at 90% capacity, UMAPS guarantees a stable service at the beginning of the year. Areas supplied by Los Laureles and La Concepción will receive water every second or third day. Areas supplied by El Picacho will continue with a three-day interval between distributions.”
UMAPS warnings for the coming months
“Although current conditions are favourable, the authorities have warned that the frequency of distributions could decrease during the hottest months of the year, especially in the higher areas of Tegucigalpa.”
Recommendations for the responsible use of water
UMAPS is urging the population to use the resource wisely in order to avoid supply problems in the future. Some recommendations include
- Repair domestic leaks: Ensure that water is not wasted through damaged taps or pipes.
- Collect water: Store water in clean containers on water supply days.
- Avoid waste: Use water only for essential needs such as hygiene, cleaning and cooking.
