Residents of Najayo el Medio, in Yaguate, Dominican Republic, protest against the lack of drinking water.

Residents of Najayo el Medio, in Yaguate, San Cristóbal, held a protest to demand a solution to the problem of drinking water in the community. According to the residents, they have not received the precious liquid for several decades and are fed up with the unfulfilled promises of local politicians.

The complainants said that the lack of water has forced them to buy water tanks at high prices, between 90 and 100 pesos, which they consider an abuse, since most of the sector’s inhabitants do not have sufficient resources to meet this constant expense.

We are tired of waiting. We have been promised solutions on several occasions, but the situation remains the same. We can’t go on living like this, without drinking water and paying such high prices for what should be a basic right,’ said one of those affected during the protest.

What do the authorities say?

Two months ago, the residents of Najayo el Medio held a meeting with the authorities of the National Institute of Drinking Water and Sewage (Inapa), but they say they have yet to receive any concrete response or solution to the problem.

The community members warned that if an immediate solution is not found, they will intensify their actions with mobilisations and street protests until the authorities pay attention to their situation. We will continue to fight until we get an answer. Water is vital and we will not be silent,’ said one of the protest leaders.
