More than 200 schools in Soconusco in crisis due to lack of piped water.
Schools spend days without the vital liquid, preventing them from carrying out basic necessities such as using the toilets and cleaning the classrooms. Some 200 primary schools in Soconusco are suffering from a lack of piped water, a problem that has worsened in recent months and poses a latent risk to the student community.
The secretary of the National Education Workers’ Union (SNTE – CNTE) denounced that schools in Tapachula, Suchiate, Huehuetán and Mazatán are suffering from a lack of water, and said that schools are going without this vital liquid for days on end, preventing them from carrying out basic activities such as using toilets and cleaning classrooms and other facilities.
He pointed out that piped water is essential for schools to function, so they are calling on the authorities to ensure that water reaches schools on time.
“There are at least 200 schools that are suffering from a lack of water, so we ask the authorities and those responsible for distribution to guarantee this basic service to schools.”
He pointed out that the lack of water poses a risk to the health of the student community and teachers, which is of concern to the directors, who are raising their voices to ensure that this problem in the area is addressed as soon as possible.
He mentioned that the Directors and Parents’ Committees, in coordination, have to buy water pipes to supply the schools, but the cost is high and it would be difficult for them to continue paying for this item.
