Water is scarce and farmers… irrigate it: the challenge of technological irrigation in Mexico.
In Mexico, 75.7% of the water extracted from natural sources is used in agriculture, but 65% of it is wasted. The federal government plans to put 200,000 hectares of irrigation under technology in the next six years, which represents 2.7% of the hectares already under technology, but it could recover at least 5% of the water it sends to the plots each year before it is wasted.
Mexico needs to significantly increase the area under irrigated agriculture and improve its efficiency, as water for human consumption is essential and at least 80% of agricultural production comes from this type of agriculture.
