During her visit to the municipality of Valle de Chalco in the state of Mexico, President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo not only handed out Vivienda para el Bienestar cards to beneficiaries, but also questioned the residents about their main problems, at least six of which were identified as urgent and which she promised to review within six months.

Accompanied by members of her official and extended cabinet, as well as municipal authorities, the mayor listened to the petitions of those present, who, following a vote, highlighted the following issues as the most urgent:

  • Safety
  • Potholes
  • Drinking water
  • Drainage
  • Street lighting
  • Litter
  • Pavements
  • Road bridges

When the activist from the National Regeneration Movement (Morena) took the floor, she announced the creation of a “bag” of resources from the three levels of government – municipal, state and federal – to be allocated for this purpose, to the cheers and applause of those present.

The aid for Valle de Chalco

In the presence of the mayor of the municipality, Alan Velazco, and the governor of the state of Mexico, Delfina Gómez Álvarez, the President of the Republic acknowledged that sometimes the municipalities do not have enough resources, so they are going to work together to ensure that they have enough resources and to achieve results in the short term. The president announced

“We are going to help Alan, because sometimes the resources of the municipality are not enough, so what are we going to do, we are going to create a fund, the municipality is going to put up a part according to the resources it has, the State of Mexico is going to put up another part and the federal government, the Mexican government, is going to put up another part, and the fund is going to be big.”

Despite this premise, and to the chants of ‘we want water, we want water’ from those present, the President stressed that Efraín Morales López, the current director of the National Water Commission (Conagua), is a first-rate official, and that with this joint support it would be possible to supply the inhabitants of the area with this vital liquid.

In the same way, the Morenista and former head of government of Mexico City said that the work would be carried out gradually, but that direct communication would be maintained with the mayor so that he could return in six months’ time to hear from the citizens and know if progress had been made.

“This is the objective of this comprehensive programme for the eastern zone of Mexico City, Mexico City and the State of Mexico, the Valley of Mexico; so we’re going to make progress little by little, that’s our commitment, and if you receive me again, I can come back in six months and you can tell me: ‘well, we haven’t made any progress or only a little’ or ‘you’ve already come to see us’, do you agree?”
