Dozens of South Australian townships fear a recurring disaster without future-proofing water supply.
Water carting businesses are under immense pressure, as wait times blow out from four to six weeks.
In a statement, Environment Minister Susan Close said that living in a region that was not connected to mains water was an option that many landholders were “happy to choose … because they do not usually have to pay for their water unlike those on the grid”.
“While some off-grid households may have been able to rely on their existing rainwater storages or groundwater supplies in the past, this may not be the case in the future,” she said.
