Take parat in the Italian “Blue Communities” events campaign for World Water Day 2025. Young community promoters in defence of water!
On the occasion of the World Water Day, held every year on 22 March, the partners of the Blue Communities Campaign are promoting several events in Italy with the aim of raising awareness among global institutions and civil society, especially among young people, about the importance of reducing water waste and adopting behaviours to combat climate change.
Marco Iob (CeVI) – the coordinator of the “Blue Communities – Young community promoters in defence of water! Project – states:
“With this project we have been working for three years with Italian schools to make children responsible and aware of the use of water and to turn them into promoters and active citizens in the defence of water.”
The “Blue Communities” do not yet exist in Italy; they exist in Canada and other countries, but they will soon be created in Italy. They are small or large outposts for the protection and valorisation of water, real communities that, with different approaches and tools, are committed to the defence of this essential resource.

In order to become a Blue Community, it is important to be ready to take care of water in the ways and forms that the community deems most useful and effective, within the framework of general principles and objectives that it is important to share and commit to.
The basic principles to which all Blue Communities in the world must adhere are:
a) Recognition of the human right to water and sanitation;
b) Promotion of publicly financed and managed water supply and sanitation systems;
c) Promotion of the consumption of tap water and progressive reduction of the sale of bottled water by reducing the use of plastic.
In addition to these basic principles, each Community may provide for others, such as
- the defence and protection of aquatic ecosystems;
- the reduction of the water footprint (direct and indirect consumption);
- the promotion of a culture of water as a common good;
- and many others.
In Udine, a joint action between institutions, schools and citizens is highlighted: the ITG Institute “GG Marinoni”, a school already committed to sustainability to promote concrete actions to save water and protect water resources, and the commitment of the Municipality of Udine, which aims to strengthen its role in sustainable water management through river contracts and the path to becoming a “Blue Community”. The aim is to combat water wastage, reduce the water footprint and protect rivers, lakes and aquatic ecosystems.
The “Blue Communities” project, coordinated by CeVI – International Volunteer Centre, co-financed by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation and launched last year, aims to promote the mobilisation of young people to support the creation of Blue Communities, understood as territorial networks of actors – schools, institutions, citizens, civil society organisations, water managers, local administrations, economic operators – who work together actively and responsibly to reduce direct and indirect water consumption in response to the growing scarcity of water.
The initiative is therefore aimed at young people aged between 14 and 30 in the regions of Piedmont, Veneto, Friuli Venezia Giulia, Emilia Romagna, Tuscany, Lazio and Sicily. In addition to CeVI, the project partners are Acquifera APS, AWorld benefit company, Cittadinanzattiva APS, Coordination of the local Italian Agenda 21 CA21L, Fondazione La Locomotiva onlus, Gruppo Missioni Africa GMA, H4O Help for Optimism, Navdanya International, People Help the People APS, Solidarietà e Cooperazione CIPSI, DPIA of the University of Udine.
