From the Canadian Blue Community Water Watchers: We’ve been protecting water for a long time at Water Watchers.Almost 20 years in fact. It’s not a new issue. We often face really tough odds, yet sometimes we win and always we know how important it is to keep speaking up for Water, to defend Her, and protect Her in all Her forms. With the threats being leveraged at our collective waters from south of the Medicine Line, there’s been an emerging consensus that we must band together to protect water from the nefarious outside sources seeking to own Her and commodify Her. We uphold this is true and we are working alongside water defenders from across Turtle Island to hold this line. In the same breath, we need to remember to uphold what we’ve been learning for the last two decades – that to address root causes of injustice, we must center Indigenous sovereignty in our water protection work. We hold as strong tenants and values that Indigenous sovereignty and solidarity are core pathways to our collective liberation from the systems that commodify, corrupt, and colonize waters across Turtle Island. In the heart of this idea, we’ll be offering several events over the next few months featuring Indigenous voices and water protectors across a number of different water justice movements so we can continue building deeper pathways of understanding, solidarity, and collaboration toward a future that serves all life. We are grateful to have you with us on this unlearning and rebuilding journey. We trust you’ll be inspired by the forth-coming sessions. We truly believe our most hopeful path forward is the one we walk together, with water and Indigenous sovereignty held at the center. Humbly yours in the journey,
