Governments Must Resist Water Privatisation Amid Climate Crisis – Water Justice Coalition.
As the world commemorates World Water Day 2025, the Our Water Our Right Africa Coalition (OWORAC) has issued a strong warning against the growing threat of water privatisation across Africa, urging governments to protect public water systems instead of ceding control to profit-driven corporations.
The coalition argues that the worsening climate crisis should not be used as an excuse to commercialise water, a basic human right.
In a statement released on Friday, OWORAC highlighted the dangers of treating water as a market commodity, particularly under the guise of climate adaptation. The coalition called on African leaders to prioritise public investment in water infrastructure rather than handing over essential resources to private entities.
