Maximum alarm due to drought: the aquifers of Ibiza and Formentera are at 34%.
This is the lowest figure in the Balearic Islands. This Thursday, the councillor for the sea and the hydrological cycle, Juan Manuel Lafuente, accompanied by the director general of water resources, Joan Calafat, and the manager of Abaqua, Emeterio Moles, presented the government’s new campaign to save water, with the slogan ‘Without water there is no future, save water’.
This initiative, according to a press release from the Regional Ministry, aims to raise awareness among citizens of the importance of responsible water use, especially in light of the growing scarcity of water.
The campaign will be disseminated through various channels, including television, radio, written and digital press and social networks, and will be available in Catalan, Spanish, English and German, with the aim of reaching both residents and tourists.
During the launch, Minister Lafuente stressed that water reserves are dwindling, droughts are becoming more frequent and aquifers are under great pressure. “It is essential to act responsibly in order to preserve this vital resource,” he said.
As of today, 90% of the territory is in a pre-alert situation in terms of water availability. Meanwhile, February ended with 51% of water reserves in the Balearic Islands. Specifically, 52% in Majorca, 51% in Menorca and 34% in Ibiza and Formentera.
“These levels force us to take measures to prevent the situation from getting worse. Efficient water management is a priority for the government”, the minister added.
During the ceremony, the campaign video was also shown, reinforcing the message and underlining the urgency of the action.
The Minister reminded the audience that the Catalan Government is committed to ensuring the efficient and sustainable management of water resources. “We are in a delicate situation and that is why we are calling on all citizens to be aware of the importance of water and to adopt responsible consumption habits,” he said. This campaign is part of a series of initiatives being promoted by the government to promote the value of such a precious commodity as water, a value that is often ‘only given when it is missing’.
The campaign’s advert delivers a powerful message to make people think about the importance of every drop of water. “Without water, we have no future. Every time we waste water, something of us dries up, our fields, our springs and our dreams”, the video says.
The campaign is designed to reach out to all segments of the population to make them aware of the need to change their consumption habits.
The campaign is being launched to take advantage of the World Water Day, celebrated this Saturday, 22 March, a symbolic date that reinforces the call for civic responsibility in saving and preserving a resource that is so essential to the well-being of the islands.
