Aguas Sierra de Cádiz joins the international Blue Communities movement.
The public company reaffirms its commitment to the human right to water, public management and the reduction of plastics.
Aguas Sierra de Cádiz, the public entity responsible for managing the integral water cycle in the Sierra de Cádiz region, has formalised its accession to the international Blue Communities movement. This initiative promotes the protection and sustainable management of water, based on three fundamental principles:
- Recognising the human right to water and sanitation: Ensuring that all people have access to safe drinking water of sufficient quality and quantity, and adequate sanitation. This right was recognised by the UN General Assembly in June 2010.
- Public management of water supply: Ensure that water supply and sanitation services are managed and financed by the public sector, avoiding economic speculation on this essential resource and prioritising an equitable and solidarity-based service.
- Phasing out the use of plastics: Encourage the consumption of tap water rather than plastic bottled water, thereby reducing the pollution associated with the excessive use of plastics.
The Blue Communities movement, which originated in Canada, involves a number of cities and organisations around the world that have adopted these principles. Internationally, cities such as Paris (France), Munich, Berlin (Germany), Brussels (Belgium), Los Angeles (USA) and Montreal (Canada) stand out for their commitment to public water management and reducing plastic use. In Spain, municipalities such as Barcelona and Cadiz have also joined the initiative, implementing policies that guarantee the right to water and promote responsible water consumption.
The accession of Aguas Sierra de Cádiz strengthens the region’s commitment to sustainable and public water management, in line with the best international practices in this field.
AEOPAS, as ambassador of the Blue Communities project in Spain, invites other local authorities and public operators to join this initiative. Joining the movement not only implies a commitment to sustainability and equity in access to water, but also offers the opportunity to participate in a global network dedicated to sharing experiences and best practices in water management.
