Canada: New Host of Threats to Water

From the Canadian Blue Community Water Watchers:

๐Ÿ’ง The water is calling us in ๐Ÿ’ง Will you rise with her? As World Water Month comes to a close, we find ourselves surrounded by a whole new host of threats to water.

From south of the Medicine Line and from inside our own borders, new threats to the life-giving waters around us continue to emerge. International figures are threatening to withdraw from bi-lateral agreements governing transboundary waters. Businesses are seeking to further commodify water for profit. Political representatives who say they care about our collective future are actively scheming to streamline new, massive pipeline projects at a frightening scale through ignoring their duty to consult Indigenous Nations.

Through all of this, the water will suffer. But it’s not a done deal.

Time and time again, we have seen the power of community when we come together through the water. Together, we’ve held the line against water bottling. We’ve stopped new aggregate extraction pits and other extractive industry. We’ve protected the sanctity of the Greenbelt. We’ve stopped massive sprawl agendas. We’ve haltedย  pipeline and nuclear storage projects in their tracks.ย And we will keep showing up to stop whatever comes next.

The threats will continue to emerge in new forms, just as they are now, but through maintaining our togetherness and building the water justice movement, we can meet those threats with the people power it will take to ensure water is protected now and into the future.

The water needs us now more than ever. We invite you to join us as we respond to the emergent threats of this moment. Water is ๐Ÿ’ง POWERFUL ๐Ÿ’ง and both community & grassroots organizing are at the heart of the solutions we need to ensure a more just water future for our human and non-human kin.

Just as the water means so much to you, you matter so deeply to this movement. We are inspired every day by the stories of individuals in our communities raising their voice in defense of water and we’ll continue to share opportunities that amplify your individual voice through collective action.

Yours in water,

Arlene & Dani
