15 April 2025 – ‘Water, Common Good: Together towards a Blue Community’. First step in Sicily towards the creation of a Blue Community.
Water is a human right and a common good, not a commodity. With this in mind, on 15th April at 3.30 p.m., in the Council Chamber of the Municipality of Scillato, about twenty municipalities of the Madonie area, associations, third sector organisations and public and private entities committed to protecting the environment and promoting active citizenship will sign the candidature for the first Blue Community in Sicily.
The event “Water, common good: Together towards the Blue Community’ will be attended by Giuseppe Labita (People Help the People, facilitator of the process), Alessandro Ficile (So.Svi.Ma) and Marco Iob, national coordinator of the ‘Blue Communities – Young community promoters in defence of water’ project.
The initiative is part of the national Blue Communities project, coordinated by CeVI – Centro di Volontariato Internazionale and co-financed by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation, which aims to activate territorial networks that promote water saving and sustainable resource management in response to the increasing water scarcity caused by climate change.
“At a time when environmental crises are getting worse, reaffirming water as a human right is an act of responsibility and justice”, says Giuseppe Labita, President of People Help the People. “By signing this candidacy, we are saying that a different management model is possible: inclusive, participatory, environmentally sound and based on the common good. It is an important step for our communities and for the young people we want to make protagonists of change.”
The Blue Community application will be joined by: SO.SVI.MA, the Municipality of Caltavuturo, the Municipality of Campofelice di Roccella, the Municipality of Castelbuono, the Municipality of Collesano, the Municipality of Gangi, the Municipality of Geraci Siculo, the Municipality of Gratteri, the Municipality of Isnello, the Municipality of Petralia Soprana, the Municipality of Petralia Sottana, the Municipality of Polizzi Generosa, the Municipality of Pollina, the Municipality of Scillato, the Municipality of Sclafani Bagni, the Madonie Park Authority, G.
