The Canadian Blue Community Water Watchers calls to vote for water protection:
On April 22, Water Watchers along with 84 other Indigenous-led and environmental organizations united in a clear message to all federal parties and candidates: Canada’s water is not a bargaining chip.
Amidst ongoing threats from the Trump administration, this network of groups shared an open letter to all federal political parties and their respective leaders, urging them to protect Canada’s freshwater.
This election, we are calling on leaders to protect freshwater health, uphold Indigenous sovereignty and water rights, and reject any attempt to privatize or export our shared waters.
This Monday when you cast your vote, remember to vote for water. The Trump administration has threatened to tear up North American water agreements and scrapped their Environmental Protection Agency. We need strong policies in places that will protect the water, land and its rightful stewards.
What is your candidate’s position on the following demands?
- Enforce and strengthen policies that protect freshwater, including The International Boundary Waters Treaty Act and The Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement, the Columbia River Treaty and all Canadian legislation that protects water;
- Prevent water privatization and bulk export of water and ensure Indigenous sovereignty is respected and upheld;
- Invest in freshwater research, restoration and health;
- Respect Indigenous nations’ sovereignty and water rights, including inherent, treaty, and legislative rights which extend to the shared governance and protection of healthy water resources.
