In Tuscany, one in three families does not trust the tap water they drink, a figure similar to that in the southern regions.
The Istat data tell the story of the water situation in the country, the regularity of the supply is in line with the national average.
In Sicily and Sardinia, one in two families does not trust the tap water they drink, while in Friuli-Venezia Giulia it is only one in ten. Tuscany is one of the five regions with the highest level of mistrust. In Calabria and Sicily, 3 out of 10 families report irregularity in the water supply, while in Lombardy and Val d’Aosta it is 1 out of 50. ISTAT data on the water situation in the country show very different situations depending on the region of residence, with greater difficulties in the south, with a few exceptions.
The top 5 regions where people do not trust the water
Compared to the national average of 28.7% of families who do not trust the tap water, the difficulties of the islands are evident: in fact, immediately after Sicily, where 50% of families do not consider their home water drinkable, comes Sardinia, where the percentage drops slightly (48.2%). Calabria follows at a distance with 39.9%, Campania with 35.9%, Tuscany with 34.9% and Abruzzo with 31.2%. Approaching the national average are Molise (29.2%), Apulia (29.1%), Umbria (28.7) and Emilia Romagna (26.4%).
Estimates improve in the north
Moving up the boot, the percentages improve in Piedmont, where 25.6% have doubts about tap water, followed by Lombardy (25.5%). Even better percentages are recorded in two central regions, Marche and Lazio, where 24.9% and 24.2% respectively do not trust tap water. Returning to the north, in Liguria, 22.7% of households do not trust tap water. The only ‘exception’ in the south is Basilicata, where only 20.2% have doubts about the safety of their tap water, followed by Veneto (15.8%) and Valle d’Aosta (10.8%). The last region in the ranking is Friuli Venezia Giulia with 12.5%.
In terms of irregularity of water supply, compared to the national average of 8.7%, three times as many households in Calabria (29.9%) and Sicily (29.2%) report difficulties. Far behind are Sardinia (18%), Abruzzo (17.1%), Campania (15%), Molise (13.6%) and Basilicata (13.4%). Lazio (7%), Tuscany and Apulia (both 6.3%) are close to the national average. Below the average are Piedmont (5.4%), Liguria (4.8%), Emilia Romagna (4.4%), Umbria (4.2%), Veneto (3.2%), Marche (3.1%), Friuli Venezia Giulia (2.5%), Valle d’Aosta and Lombardy (both 1.8%).
