Welcome the First Blue Community in Uganda: ‹Ojulu Island Saviours Foundation› joins the network.
The ‹Ojulu Island Saviours Foundation› is dedicated to empowering local communities, especially on Uganda‘s islands, and advocating for environmental sustainability, with a particular focus on water access and quality: «Our primary goal is to expand our water access initiatives in Sigulu Island and surrounding communities.»
Established 2023, the organisation has an office in Uganda’s capital Kampala, but mainly works on Sigulu island and other remote islands on Lake Victoria. Odongo Moses Ojulu, Kyambogo University graduate and founder/CEO of the foundation, was born and raised on Sigulu Island in Uganda. He is a humanitarian dedicated to transforming island communities and founded Ojulu Island Saviours Foundation to promote clean water access, environmental conservation, and education.
Odongo Moses Ojulu explains: «We firmly believe in the importance of the fundamental human right to water and sanitation, and we are excited to align our efforts with the core principles of the Blue Community. Our foundation is firmly against the privatization of water and believes in the importance of water as a shared, public resource.»
And he states on the Ojulu Island Saviours Foundation joining the Blue Community:
«The Blue Community stands for the urgent need for clean and safe water in island communities. Understanding the health risks of drinking unboiled lake water, they champion water quality as a fundamental human right. Through this, we both prioritize sustainable clean water initiatives, ensuring every individual has access to this vital resource. Bravo to the Blue Community for making safe water a reality for all!»
Blue Community Ambassador Fredrick Mugira, celebrated water, wildlife, and climate change journalist based in Uganda, welcomes the ‹Ojulu Island Saviours Foundation› as a local-community based valuable addition to our network.
Blue Community co-founder Maude Barlow warmly welcomes the Ojulu Island Saviours Foundation as the first affiliate in Uganda. She says: «Lake Victoria is a precious and important water ressource for Africa. But even with so much water in the lake, people on the islands don’t have clean drinking water. Supporting the human right to water and sanitation by building local water infrastructures, advocate for government accountability in providing clean water to these underserved communities, and providing education on water and sanitation to the local communities to ensure safe water use practices is a highly important and honourable task.»
Reverend Kolade Fadahunsi, Coordinator of ‹Ecumenical Water Network Africa› and the African Chapter of the Blue Community, welcomes the new affiliate: «We expect the enthusiasm of Blue Community members in Africa to translate to decisive actions such that promote the objectives of the community. The very essence of making water a human rights has been a very core assignment for us. As we welcome you, we hope to gather ourselves at a conference soon as African Blue Community!»
