We were expecting an act of contrition, but all we got was condescension.
When Sir Adrian Montague, the chairman of Thames Water, and the company’s chief executive, Chris Weston, appeared before the Environment Select Committee on Tuesday they treated the country to a brazen display of buck-passing and greed.
It is hard to overstate the gall of these two men, who told MPs that their fast-collapsing utility should be spared nearly £1 billion of fines imposed by the regulator Ofwat for polluting our waterways with raw sewage, wasting shocking amounts of water through leaking mains pipes and providing atrocious customer service.
