Germany’s biggest water guzzlers. by Annika Joeres , Gesa Steeger , Katarina Huth for Correctiv.

German large-scale industry consumes trillions of liters of water annually—many times more than private households. Nevertheless, according to CORRECTIV research, it will be primarily citizens who will have to save water in the future: Decade-long contracts secure the consumption of industry and large-scale consumers.

Dry fields, forest fires, and cities calling on their citizens to conserve water – while water is becoming scarce in many regions of Germany, at least industry has little to worry about. The federal government and its predecessors have failed to oblige major consumers like RWE and BASF to conserve water and limit their consumption. Yet, according to CORRECTIV research, open-cast coal mines, chemical companies, and the food industry use almost four times as much river and groundwater as all citizens combined – and can continue to do so with decades-long contracts.
