The Colorado River basin has lost 27.8m acre-feet of groundwater in the past 20 years, an amount of water nearly equivalent to the full capacity of Lake Mead, the largest reservoir in the United States, a new study has found. The research findings, based on Nasa satellite imagery from across the south-west, highlight the scale of the ongoing water crisis in the region, as both groundwater and surface water are being severely depleted.

In Pakistan, desert irrigation plans spark protests & fears among Sindh farmers
In Pakistan, thousands of protesters have fought against the Cholistan Canal Project, which would divert water from the Indus River to irrigate millions of hectares of desert for corporate farming. Opponents say the project would threaten local desert species and leave small-scale farmers and fishers in Sindh province without the water they need; this comes on top of an existing water shortage in the region. Water has been one of the region’s most contentious issues, dating back decades and causing a rift between Sindh province and the Federation of Pakistan; now, the future of Pakistan’s water is even more uncertain since India suspended the Indus Waters Treaty of 1960, which governs shared waters between the two countries.

Mutale Nalumango, during the conference’s opening ceremony at the Mulungushi International Conference Centre in Lusaka, President Hichilema emphasised that this is a critical moment for Africa to address its water security challenges and ensure that every citizen has access to clean and safe water and dignified sanitation.

Burundi’s economic capital is almost paralysed by a water shortage.
The situation has worsened in Bujumbura, the economic capital of Burundi. Several districts have no water at all. Residents spend hours in the streets carrying buckets and jerry cans in search of water. They are calling on Regideso for help.
