From the Blue Community / Blue City of Berlin:
Water Consumption exceptionally high.
The sun heated up the city on Wednesday. Those who could fled to the swimming pool. Water consumption rose significantly in the extreme heat.
According to Berliner Wasserbetriebe, around 880,000 cubic metres of drinking water were fed into the water network on the hottest day of the year. On Tuesday, around 822,900 cubic metres were pumped. The waterworks’ average daily output is around 600,000 cubic metres.
‘We are still quite a long way off record levels,’ said a company spokesperson. “The last time we experienced similarly high demand was on 18 June 2021, when it exceeded 920,000 cubic metres.” He added that demand levels had returned to those seen during the ‘dry years of 2019 to 2021’.
‘We coped well with this hot day without any restrictions, but we are looking forward to the rain forecast for today, which has just started, in order to conserve resources.’
In 2024, Berliner Wasserbetriebe sold over 214 million cubic metres of drinking water, approximately three million more than the previous year. The volume of wastewater in the treatment plants remained largely unchanged at just under 265 million cubic metres.
