From the German Blue Community / Blue City of Berlin:
The Berlin district wants to make adjustments that will benefit children.
These changes could improve everyday life for many children and reduce health risks. However, it may take a while to come into effect.
Berlin has over 200 public drinking fountains that provide free drinking water from April to October. In Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg, these are now to be made more accessible for children. Peggy Hochstätter (SPD) told the Tagesspiegel newspaper: “Up to a certain height, it is extremely difficult for children to drink from the fountains.”
Improving drinking fountains for children in Berlin
The district council has approved the motion ‘Making drinking fountains more accessible for children’. The Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg district office, led by the Green Party, will be responsible for implementation. One possible solution would be to install non-slip steps. However, rapid implementation before the end of the summer is unlikely.
According to the councillors, young children often have difficulty drinking water safely. Dangerous climbing or being lifted up by parents can pose risks.
