Greetings from the mandate of the Special Rapporteur on the human rights to safe drinking water and sanitation.

The Special Rapporteur is glad to announce the launch of a Social Platform for the upcoming 2026 UN Water Conference.

Following the three informative sessions held in June, the Special Rapporteur would like to establish an open channel of communication with all of you.

The Social Platform is an initiative of the Special Rapporteur to implement the Human Rights Council Resolution 57/13 of 2024 which called the Special Rapporteur to actively engage in the preparatory process of the Conference, to ensure that the human rights dimension is adequately reflected in the agenda and outcome of the Conference and to ensure broad and inclusive civil society representation.

The general aim of the Social Platform is to advocate for the meaningful inclusion of diverse civil society voices, Indigenous Peoples, peasants’ communities, unions, professional organizations, academia, social movements and rights- holders, especially those historically marginalized, in the preparatory processes and proceedings of the upcoming United Nations Water Conference 2026.

Inspired by the Water Justice Manifesto, which gathered the support of more than 500 organisations and was presented at the plenary of the 2023 Water Conference, the platform is created to support this collective commitment.

At this stage, the Special Rapporteur warmly encourage you to register here  to stay informed about the next steps of the Platform and receive updates on the 2026 Water Conference proceedings, both substantive and logistical.

The Special Rapporteur invites you to share this message among your networks, particularly grassroots organisations.

With best regards

Mandate of the Special Rapporteur on the human rights to safe drinking water and sanitation, Pedro Arrojo-Agudo
