Canada: Stop Line 5 Pipeline

🌊 Tell the federal government to shut down Line 5!

Line 5 is an oil & gas pipeline owned and operated by Enbridge, a Canadian multinational corporation.

This aging pipeline carries crude oil and natural gas liquids (NGLs) from Canada’s tar sands through the US. Starting at Superior, Wisconsin, and ending in Sarnia, Ontario, Line 5 cuts through many environmentally sensitive areas such as the Straights of Mackinac and sovereign Indigenous lands.

Line 5 poses significant environmental risks, endangers the security of the Great Lakes, threatens Indigenous sovereignty, and undermines Canada’s commitments to environmental justice and reconciliation.

As of 2020, Enbridge’s Line 5 has spilled over 4.5 million litres or 1.1 million gallons of oil into the Great Lakes basin. Today, that number is even higher with new Enbridge oil spills as recent as December 2024.

Line 5 was only meant to last 50 years, but now it’s over 70 years old now. It’s time to lay this pipeline to rest.

The Devastating Implications of Line 5

The Straits of Mackinac are more than a passage, they are the heart of Turtle Island. Beneath these waters lies the back of the mother turtle, the being from whom this land was born. This lakebed holds sacred burial grounds, the resting places of Anishinaabek ancestors, and the memory of leaders who guided these lands with deep respect.

Digging a tunnel here is not merely an engineering choice, it is a spiritual wound.

It desecrates a sacred site that demands protection and reverence. We do not cut through the bones of our ancestors. We do not risk the heart of Turtle Island.

The fossil fuel industry is increasingly volatile, driven by boom-and-bust cycles that leave workers and communities behind.

The illusion of stable, long-term employment is just that, an illusion. In contrast, renewable energy creates more durable jobs in areas like retrofitting, infrastructure, and ecological restoration, but only if those opportunities are made equitable, safe, and accessible. Even federal data confirms: nearly every other sector outpaces fossil fuels in job creation.

Renewables are already outcompeting fossil fuels in cost across many regions. Leading energy economists are calling on governments to abandon expensive, legally risky projects like Line 5 and instead invest in a cleaner, more resilient future.
