More than 1,900 schoolchildren in the Sierra de Cádiz have learnt about water.

The Spanish Blue Community public company Aguas Sierra de Cádiz, which is part of the Association of Municipalities of the Sierra de Cádiz, has concluded an environmental education campaign aimed at raising awareness of the water cycle. As part of an environmental training and awareness campaign carried out during the 2024-2025 academic year, this initiative reached 1,936 schoolchildren from 23 educational centres in the region.

The programme included 77 face-to-face training sessions adapted to different educational levels, from preschool to primary school. The workshops promoted knowledge of water management and the responsible use of this resource, emphasising its connection to the local environment. The sessions were led by environmental education specialists and benefited from the active collaboration of teachers from the participating schools.

Remarkable in terms of its territorial coverage, the programme has encompassed several municipalities in the Sierra de Cádiz. These include Algodonales, Alcalá del Valle, Benaocaz, El Bosque, El Gastor, Espera, Grazalema, Olvera, Puerto Serrano, Setenil de las Bodegas, Villaluenga del Rosario, Zahara de la Sierra, Bornos, Coto de Bornos, Torre Alháquime, Algar and Prado del Rey. Participation exceeded one hundred students in some schools, including CEIP Antonio Machado in Espera (211 students), CEIP Escuelas Verdes in Puerto Serrano (151 students) and CEIP Virgen del Carmen in Setenil (138 students).

The programme’s evaluation in schools has been very positive, with top marks in several areas. The monitors obtained the maximum score of 10 in the ‘Monitors’ category, while the programme’s content, resources and organisation also received high marks (9.69, 9.85 and 9.73, respectively). However, some schools suggested increasing the number of hands-on activities and adjusting the technical language for the most basic levels.

The campaign demonstrates the Association of Municipalities of the Sierra de Cádiz’s commitment to environmental education and sustainability. It aligns with the policies promoted by the Blue Community AEOPAS (the Spanish Association of Public Water Supply and Sanitation Operators), which has provided fundamental technical support to ensure the training is rigorous and effective.
