Quality, accessibility and transparency. Parisians have expressed confidence in the capital’s drinking water.
The annual survey conducted by Eau de Paris, the Parisian drinking water authority, shows positive results in terms of quality, accessibility, and transparency towards consumers.
The 2025 survey of Parisian water users shows that Parisians are generally satisfied with the taste and quality of their drinking water. Conducted in May, this study shows that confidence in the capital’s tap water remains stable and high.
Eight out of ten Parisians surveyed in a panel of 1,000 say they drink tap water at home. However, some criticise the taste, calcium content or chlorine levels of this water. 52% of them also drink tap water outside their homes, thanks particularly to the network of 1,300 drinking fountains located throughout Paris. Nevertheless, 28% of respondents said they did not trust these fountains due to concerns about hygiene or safety.
According to Eau de Paris, the public company responsible for the city’s water supply, the amount of pesticides used in 2023 was 77% lower than in previous years, equivalent to 55 tonnes of plant protection products avoided. In this regard, 82% of those surveyed would like to be informed about the presence of pesticides in the water.
‘Paris’ water is 100% compliant with health standards and will remain so in 2026 thanks to the treatments put in place and the resource protection measures carried out by Eau de Paris over the last 25 years,’ says Dan Lert, president of Eau de Paris and Paris deputy mayor (Les Écologistes) responsible for ecological transition, climate, water and energy.
The study also shows that six out of ten Parisians have reduced their usual water consumption, particularly when washing dishes or showering. Most of them say they are concerned about water quality, its source, its price, the available volume and the measurement of water quality in a building. To address the challenges posed by micropollutants, the public company says it has increased its treatment efforts in 2024 at an estimated additional cost of €2 million.
