Welcome Pokot Women Health Right (PWHR) from Kenya as a Blue Community.
One more organisation from Kenya is turning blue and joining the Blue Community Network: Pokot Women Health Rights.
PWHR is a registered Community-Based Organization (CBO) working at the grassroots level in West Pokot County, Kenya.
West Pokot County is home to the Pokot community — a pastoralist society facing unique socio-economic, cultural, and environmental challenges. Many women and girls here lack access to quality health services, face deeply entrenched gender norms, and are vulnerable to practices that undermine their rights and opportunities. By working directly with local leaders, families, schools, and community health volunteers, PWHR creates culturally sensitive solutions to build a safer, healthier, and more equitable future for all.
PWHR’s programs focus on three core areas:
-
Eradicating harmful cultural practices like Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and child marriage, which remain prevalent in many parts of West Pokot.
-
Promoting education for girls and women, recognizing that education is key to breaking cycles of poverty and dependence.
-
Empowering communities economically and socially to combat poverty and inequality through vocational training, income-generating activities, and awareness campaigns.
Water Access & Conservation is one of the core objectives and programs of PWHR. As PWHR states on its website: Access to clean and safe water is a fundamental human right, yet many communities in West Pokot and other marginalized areas face severe water scarcity. Our Sustainable Water Access & Conservation Program aims to bridge this gap by implementing long-term solutions that provide safe, reliable, and sustainable water sources. (see here)
Mrs. Terry Chepyatich, PWHR Secretary and Member of the Board, states:
«At Pokot Women Health Rights, we are deeply committed to environmental protection, health promotion, and the dignity of all people. We believe that joining the Blue Community Network will strengthen our voice and help us turn global solidarity into local impact. Together, we can work towards a world where every woman and child has access to clean, safe, and public water now and for generations to come.»
Rev. Kolade Fadahunsi, coordinator of the Blue Community Chapter Africa, congratulates PWHR for the achievement of becoming a Blue Community and welcomes them in the network:
«On behalf of Blue Community Africa, I am pleased to welcome Pokot Women Health Rights to the movement for a blue continent of Africa.
Water justice is crucial to environmental justice! Pokot Women Health Right, a community-based organisation, is demonstrating comradeship by responding to the collective challenges facing humanity in Pokot County, Kenya, where many struggle daily to access clean water.
Therefore, it is a courageous step to align with the objectives of the Blue Community in mitigating the effects of water scarcity in Pokot.»
