From the Canadian Blue Community Water Watchers:

Don’t let 🇺🇸US🇺🇸 decision-makers condemn the Great Lakes! Take action now for a clean water future 💦

US decision-makers are about to decide the future of the Great Lakes and we need Canadians to take action

Enbridge, a Canadian oil & gas giant, wants to build a fossil fuel tunnel through the heart of the Great Lakes for their deteriorating Line 5 pipeline.

Line 5 was built to last 50 years, but is now over 70 years old.

It poses significant environmental risks and has already spilled over 6 million litres of fossil fuels into the Great Lakes Basin.

Instead of shutting down this old, dirty pipeline, Enbridge wants to double down on expanding fossil fuel infrastructure by building an underwater tunnel through the Great Lakes to encase Line 5.

A project like this has never been done anywhere in the world.

Right now, there are only two permits standing between Enbridge and construction on this proposed Line 5 tunnel: 1 from Michigan’s Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy and another from the US Army Corp of Engineers.

In unity with our kin across the Great Lakes, we are calling on the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) and the Honourable Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer to deny permits to Enbridge and to not approve any building of the proposed Line 5 tunnel under the Great Lakes.

We cannot let US decision-makers condemn the Great Lakes to a future of pollution, degradation, and tragedy.

We’ve had 550 Canadians send comments so far. Let’s get to 1,000!

Save The Date: Land Gathering

As folks who know the Great Lakes better than most, we’re reaching out to invite you to a gathering on August 29th in Sault Ste. Marie (ON) to stand up for the waters we all rely on.

The Line 5 pipeline tunnel puts Lake Huron and Lake Superior at serious risk—from oil spills, drilling, and erosion of treaty rights. This isn’t just political—it’s personal. Our fish, our livelihoods, our kids’ future are on the line.

We’ll gather at Shingwauk Kinoomaage Gamig for a community lunch feast, water teachings/ceremony, and a screening of the Bad River documentary—about people who, like us, are standing up for the water.

Independent research consistently shows a Line 5 shutdown would have exceedingly minimal impact on energy availability and prices.

We don’t need Line 5 construction. We need a Line 5 closure.

This is our collective chance as Great Lakes Peoples to ensure US decision-makers don’t condemn us to a future of oil spills and expanding drinking water insecurity.

We need Michigan to step up to deny permits to Enbridge for this incredibly dangerous project and to demand US decision-makers uphold the integrity of these waters above corporate profit and fossil-fuel infrastructure.

Yours in the journey of Great Lakes integrity,
Water Watchers
