The Blue Community / Blue City of Hamburg plans to significantly expand the number of public drinking water fountains.
There are currently 54 such fountains in the city, which are particularly important for the population on hot days, the SPD parliamentary group announced on Friday. A corresponding motion is to be discussed at the city parliament meeting on 10 September. Lisa Maria Otte, environmental policy spokesperson for the Green Party, said that drinking water fountains contribute to health protection and climate adaptation. She added that it is particularly important that animals such as dogs and birds also have access to water.
There are also plans to create a digital map showing all the fountains and refill stations in the city. Alexander Mohrenberg, environmental policy spokesperson for the SPD, pointed out the social significance of the fountains. Free drinking water should not depend on one’s wallet or neighbourhood. The new fountains are to be installed primarily in central locations, busy squares and sports facilities.
New public toilet in Landsberg
The Blue Community / Blue City of Landsberg has completed the construction of a new public toilet building at the train station, which has now opened. This means that travelers, commuters and visitors alike now have access to modern, comfortable toilet facilities once again.
Until the beginning of 2021, the former toilet in the station building was open to the public. However, at the request of the building’s then owner, the existing agreement with the city was terminated. The lack of a publicly accessible toilet was particularly problematic for bus and taxi drivers, senior citizens, and bus and train passengers.
The free-to-use, self-cleaning toilet facility is located in the area between the platform and the central bus station (ZOB). It consists of a barrier-free toilet room with an automatically cleaned seat and a fold-down baby changing table, a separate urinal room, and a centrally located technical room. Additional hygiene is ensured by automatic high-pressure floor cleaning after each use. A drinking fountain that can be used all year round is located directly next to the building.
