In response to the serious problem of water theft in several states across the country, Senator Juan Carlos Loera introduced a reform initiative that creates a new federal criminal offense related to the illicit appropriation of national waters , to strengthen the protection of the nation’s water heritage.
The draft decree proposes a comprehensive reform of four federal laws and contemplates penalties of four to 15 years in prison, as well as multimillion-dollar fines for those who extract, divert, or sell domestic water without authorization.
With this action, Loera seeks to put the interests of the people before political and electoral calculations and advance the National Water Plan .
