In many countries, rivers and underground channels are in danger of disappearing or are severely polluted. Global reserves are declining due to population growth, global warming, desertification and industrial activity. However, global demand for fresh water doubles every 20 years. Currently, demand for water exceeds available terrestrial resources by more than 50%, a problem known as water stress.
