“Women messengers in defense of Mother Nature” is the message on Adriana Baquero’s shirt. This 45-year-old woman arrived in Villavicencio, the capital of the Meta department in eastern Colombia, when she was eleven months old. At that time, ten separate houses perched on the mountainside of the Montecarlo Alto neighborhood, where her family settled. There were no access roads, electricity, or water. This was in the 1980s. A few years later, her father became president of the Community Action Board, a grassroots community organization that represents those who live in a neighborhood or village in Colombia and manages local initiatives for their well-being.
