To strengthen the cooperation and support, a Blue Community Switzerland – Africa partnership working group has been established. The aim is to provide targeted support and assistance for the development of the Blue Community network in Africa. A small steering group is responsible on the Swiss side, in consultation with the Blue Community Switzerland secretariat and the Blue Community Africa coordination team.
The Blue Community has been a resounding success in Switzerland. Despite being a small country with only 9 million inhabitants, there are now more than 50 Blue Communities in Switzerland. This gives the Swiss Blue Community an important role and responsibility for the global Blue Community.
The first Blue Communities in Africa were designated in spring 2024. Rev. Kolade Fadahunsi, from the Ecumenical Water Network Africa in Nigeria, became coordinator of the Blue Community Africa. Today, there are around 20 Blue Communities in Africa, primarily NGOs, as well as church organisations and two municipalities. This number is growing steadily. In order to keep pace with this rapid growth, the Blue Community is currently organized into three sub-regions, each with its own regional coordination. Rev. Kolade Fadahunsi oversees these three sub-regions, ensuring a common presence and promoting joint projects.
Pledge 4 of the Blue Community Switzerland involves cooperating with and supporting Blue Communities and partners in the Global South. What could be more appropriate than supporting the Blue Community Africa, especially since several Swiss Blue Communities already have partners and active projects in Africa, such as universities, parishes and NGOs?
The Blue Partnership Switzerland–Africa is open to Blue Communities in other countries and invites Blue Communities, as well as interested individuals and organisations, to participate and contribute to the successful develpment of the Blue Community in Africa.
