Indigenous people occupy agribusiness company building in protest against river dredging project in Pará. 

Movement denounces environmental risks, lack of permits, and threats to archaeological sites in the Itaituba region along the Tapajós River. 

Indigenous people from around 14 ethnic groups have been occupying the facilities of the Cargill company in Santarém , in western Pará, since Friday (23) , in protest against a dredging tender and initiatives that, according to the movement, pave the way for what the movement calls the ” privatization of the Tapajós River” .

Protesters denounce the impacts affecting the entire riverbed, which mainly encompasses cities in western Pará, such as Santarém, Belterra , Aveiro , Itaituba , Trairão , and Jacareacanga , and also affects the riverside population and the region’s biome.
