Review: The Future of Our Water in Action – a project by the Blue Community Neustrelitz.

How can we prevent water loss in cities? How can we create climate-resilient, vibrant, green and sustainable places? These questions were addressed by around 20 people from Neustrelitz at the September workshop, ‘The Future of Our Water in Action’.

Perception and change of perspective

The workshop began with a perception walk through the market square. Participants looked for places where water cycles were disrupted, while also discovering many opportunities for water-sensitive urban design.
A central component of the workshop was the screening of the film Water is Love at the Alte Kachelofenfabrik, followed by an inspiring discussion with experts in the field of water retention.

On the second day, the focus shifted to action. Together, the group planted new green structures in the cultural quarter to store rainwater and cool the surrounding area. At the same time, ideas and plans were developed for redesigning the Kunsthaus Neustrelitz backyard.

Closing event and next steps

On 12 November, the group met at the Kunsthaus to evaluate the results. They decided together which design ideas were realistic and which steps should be taken in 2026. Tasks were assigned, and another meeting was planned for January 2026.

Strengthening the Blue Community

The project had an impact far beyond the two workshop days. Participants reported that their perception of the landscape and the city had changed; they could now identify areas where water flows and where it is lacking, and recognise how natural retention processes could be enhanced. At the same time, a stronger sense of community emerged within the Blue Community – an important step for future projects.
