The World Economic Forum WEF in Davos, Switzerland, is over. We saw a lot of talks and promises – including on water and sanitation -, a lot of hellish speeches to make even more money for the rich, but we saw little to no action to make the world a better place. And there is an environmental issue with the WEF, addressed by the Swiss NGO umverkehR with a petition:
We have just experienced a week of extreme climate pollution: Zurich Airport alone reported around 1,000 additional flight movements during the WEF. The majority of these were private jets, which cause up to 30 times more emissions per passenger than a regular flight in economy class.
A small elite of the super-rich is thus having an enormously damaging impact on the climate. But that’s not all: more and more private jets are being purchased. Worldwide, emissions from private jets rose by 46% between 2019 and 2023!
That’s why we are saying STOP. A few days ago, the Swiss NGO umverkehR launched a petition calling for a ban on private jets in Switzerland.
Great, I’ll sign the petition against private jets! (German and French)
Incidentally, Switzerland ranks third worldwide in terms of the number of private jets per capita. This means we have a special responsibility to take action against these destructive and completely unnecessary flights!
There is another way: Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport has drastically reduced its capacity for private jets in recent years with the long-term goal of banning them completely. Thanks to pressure from the public, this could soon apply to Swiss airports too!
Thank you for signing the petition against private jets!
