URGENT: Land grabbers demand permits to deforest and destroy water sources in the Grinalda do Ouro territory.
The community organizes itself to protect the environment and the right to the territory.
A decision on a writ of mandamus on Monday (23) by Judge Lirton Nogueira Santos opened up the possibility of deforestation and water grabbing for land grabbers in the Grinalda do Ouro marshland territory in the Cerrado region of Piauí.
The decision to grant erroneous licences by environmental and land agencies violates the rights of communities in the territory and seriously jeopardises the life and protection of the Cerrado. This decision disregards ILO Convention 169, which guarantees the autonomy of traditional communities. According to technicians from the Secretariat of Environment and Water Resources (SEMARh) itself, water grabbing in the territory is unfeasible from an environmental and human perspective.
The inspection by Semarh and the suspension of the erroneous licences this week were achievements of the solidarity movement in defence of the socio-environmental and territorial rights of the communities that have preserved the Cerrado for generations. The communities in the region preserve the headwaters of the Parnaíba River and will be harmed by deforestation and water grabbing.
The Grinalda do Ouro community demands the completion of the demarcation process of its territory.
This mobilisation reveals the importance of the resistance of the peoples of the Cerrado in the face of the power of land grabbers who want to continue destroying the environment. We will continue to resist, insist and count on solidarity.
