David Thewlis nearly didn’t read the script for his new drama Dirty Business when it plonked onto his doormat. It had the working title Isle of Shite and he assumed it was a frivolous comedy that “sounded a bit stupid”. But when he finally sat down with it he discovered a searingly powerful three-part drama about the scandal of river pollution — and became so immersed that he had to call and cancel his dinner plans with his wife. And then he called his agent to say yes please.
