Water is a fundamental right that is part of human rights.
Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs (FA), International Cooperation and Egyptians Abroad, Badr Abdelatty, affirmed that water is a fundamental right which is part of human rights, stressing that it is first and foremost a human and social right and that access to drinking water is an indispensable right.
Mr. Abdelatty was speaking during his meetings with leaders of the African Union (AU), as well as with Prime Ministers and Foreign Ministers of African countries, on the sidelines of the African Union summit held in Addis Ababa.
The Egyptian foreign minister stressed that the adoption of the African Water Vision and Policy 2063 at the summit of African heads of state and government is a step forward for the preservation of the right to water and a vision that underlines the need to respect international law, including the principles of consensus, cooperation and non-prejudice, especially those relating to projects on common and transboundary rivers.
He added that the governance of the Red Sea must be limited exclusively to the littoral states, affirming Egypt’s categorical rejection of any attempt by external parties to impose themselves as partners in the governance of the Red Sea.
