Mexico’s Water Law Stillborn?

Experts fear the Water Law will be stillborn.

According to a study by Ecolab Watermark, 93% of Mexicans are concerned about water issues.

Experts point out that the new Water Law —which includes regulations to guarantee the human right to water, its management and even concessions— risks becoming a “dead letter” if challenges such as lack of resources for governments at all three levels, information on volumes and the implementation of the new legal framework are not addressed. Eduardo Vázquez Herrera, executive director of Agua Capital, said during a panel organized by the firm Ecolab Watermark:

“The worst thing that can happen after all these 13 years that it took to approve the General Water Law is that it remains a dead letter.”

The package of initiatives of the Water Law was approved by the Chamber of Deputies on December 4 and published in the Official Gazette of the Federation on the 11th of that same month.
