To mark World Water Day, the Zurich Knowledge Center for Sustainable Development (ZKSD) is hosting an exciting lecture on 18 March 2026 with researchers from the University of Zurich, the Department of Geography and the Department of Evolutionary Biology and Environmental Sciences.

The focus will be on groundwater – an often invisible but indispensable resource whose protection and sustainable use are of crucial importance.

In the first part of the evening, Dr Ilja van Meerveld and Prof. Jan Seibert (Department of Geography, UZH) will describe groundwater and the processes that influence it. In addition to the situation in Switzerland, they will also discuss groundwater resources in other regions of the world.

The second part will focus on the largely unexplored biodiversity of groundwater. Dr Mara Knüsel and Prof. Dr Florian Altermatt (Institute of Evolutionary Biology and Environmental Sciences, UZH) will present the results of the AmphiWell research project. This project conducted the first representative survey of groundwater biodiversity in Switzerland, revealing that the country is home to a unique diversity of groundwater organisms.

The final part presents the citizen science project CrowdWater and describes specific ways in which people can contribute to better water monitoring.
