Blue Community appeal for donations: Water and justice for Africa!
Terrible droughts and devastating floods mean that water is crucial to life in Africa. Even when there is a sufficient supply, water often has to be carried long distances on foot, or it is polluted and undrinkable. Climate change in Africa is a question of water and justice.
The first Blue Communities were established in Africa in spring 2024. The Blue Community network has been very active on its website and social media, and Reverend Kolade Fadahunsi has played a key role as coordinator of Blue Community Africa. As a result, Blue Community Africa has grown significantly. Today, it comprises more than two dozen Blue Communities, primarily NGOs and church organisations, as well as the first congregations, and this number is constantly growing.
In order to keep pace with this rapid growth, these Blue Communities have now been structured into three sub-regions, each with its own coordination. Reverend Kolade Fadahunsi, as coordinator of Blue Community Africa, holds these three sub-regions together and ensures a common presence, promoting joint projects.
Switzerland has more than 50 Blue Communities – the largest number worldwide – despite being a small country with only 9 million inhabitants. The Blue Community is a success story in Switzerland. Consequently, Blue Community Switzerland plays an important role and has a certain responsibility for the entire Blue Community worldwide.
Principle 4 of Blue Community Switzerland outlines the cooperation and support between Blue Community and its partners in the Global South. What could be more fitting than to support Blue Community Africa, given that several Swiss Blue Communities already have partners and active projects in Africa, such as universities, church communities and NGOs?
To strengthen the development of Blue Community Africa and cooperation, we have set up a Blue Community Switzerland–Africa partnership working group. The aim is to provide targeted support for establishing the Blue Community in Africa.
We call on parishes and all Blue Communities in Switzerland to financially support this networking and strengthening of Blue Community Africa, and thus demonstrate their commitment to water and justice in Africa, by making a contribution. Even a small donation — for example, a collection on World Water Day (22 March) — can make a big difference.
